FAA Proposes $330,000 Civil Penalty Against Heli-Dudes

logo_faaThe Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is proposing a $330,000 civil penalty against Heli-Dudes LLC, of Salt Lake City, for allegedly operating sightseeing helicopter rides for hire when it was not authorized to do so, a violation of Federal Aviation Regulations.

The FAA alleges that Heli-Dudes did not have an FAA operating certificate or letter of authorization when it conducted 30 sightseeing flights for hire between Feb. 6 and Feb 14, 2010, using a Robinson R-22, a two-seat, piston engine-powered helicopter.

Maintenance Incident at Boundary Bay Airport

logo_chcAn aircraft operated by CHC Helicopter was involved in a maintenance incident at Boundary Bay airport this afternoon at about 4 pm. The aircraft was not airborne and no passengers were on board at the time of the event. No one was injured and the incident is currently under investigation.

The aircraft is a Super Puma helicopter (registration C-GGKX) with seating capacity for 18 passengers and two pilots.

FAA Safety Briefing Celebrates 50 Years

logo_faaThe new issue of FAA Safety Briefing celebrates the publication’s 50th anniversary by looking back on the state of general aviation (GA) safety and highlighting a half century of safety focus and progress.

The magazine, then called FAA Aviation News, was first published in January 1961, just three years after the creation of the FAA. Its purpose was “to acquaint readers with the policies and programs” of the FAA. While the look of the magazine has changed, the inaugural issue’s core message of safety awareness and education has remained constant.

NTSB Requesting Comments on Proposed Procedural Rules for Aviation Certificate Enforcement Cases

logo_ntsbThe NTSB has issued an Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPRM) seeking comments from the public regarding amendments to its procedural rules dealing with review of Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certificate actions and its rules concerning applications for fees and expenses under the Equal Access to Justice Act.

The NTSB listed three main reasons for its undertaking a review of 49 CFR parts 821 and 826: (1) to respond to parties' suggestions for changing the rules; (2) to update rules that may be outdated; and (3) to modernize the rules to accommodate prospective electronic filing and document availability in case dockets.

Heliwest Strengthens Ties with FMG

logo_heliwestHeliwest, Western Australia’s largest onshore helicopter company, has extended an agreement with Fortescue Metals Group to operate the mining company’s fixed wing aircraft.

The agreement covers all flight and maintenance operations using FMG’s Twin Otter aircraft, which is used for a broad range of roles, including fly-in fly-out transfers, exploration, executive travel and travel by invited guests such as key investors, journalists and VIPs.

Bell Helicopter and Northrop Grumman Successfully Test Fire-X Unmanned Vertical System

logo_bellBell Helicopter, a Textron Inc. company (NYSE: TXT) and Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) announce the successful test of Fire-X, a new vertical unmanned system.

Development and demonstration of Fire-X is funded by Northrop Grumman and Bell Helicopter. Both companies began work on this program in early 2010 and completed its first fully autonomous flight at Yuma Proving Ground, Ariz., less than a year after development began on the project.
